Introduction to Ryan the MIS Major

 Introduction

My name is Ryan Hernandez and I was born and raised just 45 minutes from OU in Edmond, Oklahoma. Growing up my parents were fans of OU and my dad went here so it was an easy decision when I decided where I wanted to go to school. It's nice being able to be far enough away from home where I can experience freedom but also if I need to go home it is just a short drive.

I am in my Senior year at OU but I will be graduating in the fall of 2021. If you would have told me I'll graduate in 4 1/2 years when I finished freshman year I would have taken that all day. I didn't even know my major until halfway through the first semester of Junior year. Then I decided on Management Informations Systems (MIS) in the college of business. I would like to think that I am decent with technology and computers so this major made sense to me. The cool thing about being an MIS major is that with the way the world is moving today, technology-related jobs will continue to be needed so hopefully getting a job will not be difficult coming out of school. My career goals for the short-term is to get a job and save up a decent amount of money so that I can open something or invest in something where I don't have to work for someone else.

Some hobbies I enjoy are golfing, fishing, playing video games, and playing poker with my friends. The hobby I enjoy the most is probably golf. Even though I'm just okay at golf, I still have fun playing. Over quarantine and winter break I tried to play at least two times a week. Good bass fishing season is coming up though so I will have to get back into that. It's just been so cold recently that you have to be really dedicated to go out and fish. I just learned how to play poker at the start of last semester because my roommate played all the time and then I got hooked on it. Thankfully we only play $5 buy-ins because I'm still trying to get better.

  1. What's up Ryan! It's cool that you are relatively close to home. Plus you get that in-state tuition bill which is fantastic for your wallet! I'd definitely be more interested to hear what you have to say about the MIS courses here. I have taken one for my business minor. It was an interesting class, I liked it a lot. It sounds like you have a lot of fun with your friends! I also like to play poker with my friends and family (with cheap buy-ins of course). I'm wishing you a great fishing season man!

  2. Hi Ryan!
Congrats on being so close to graduation! I get what you mean, it is nice to have some freedom from home and be only a short drive away. I relate to the major change also! I love fishing too, my fishing only includes fishing off the bank of a river with friends and family for catfish but I have always thought bass fishing looked like a blast. Definitely not a golf or poker player myself but it's interesting to hear about.

  3. Hi Ryan!

I totally understand the freedom with being able to go home. My parents also live about 45 minutes away. I give all the power to you for sticking with college that long. My husband's brother took 7 years to get his bachelor's because he changed his major. Now he is really successful in his career. So don't give up!

  4. Hi Ryan! That's awesome you grew up in Edmond!! Seems like such a fun area. Poker seems really fun too. Bass fishing season is the best. I actually go fishing a lot in Norman. So many cool places around here. There's a great park across the street from Walmart that is a good fishing spot. Golfing is awesome too! I love golf!

  5. Hi Ryan!
It great that you are able to be so close to home. While I know that some people just itch to get away, I have found that being either a plane-flight or a multi-day car ride from home can be a lot sometimes. It feel like it would be really nice to have the option to just go home for the weekend.
    Good luck this semester!

  6. Hi Ryan! I live in Norman, so I can completely relate to being very close to home but still being able to experience college! I hope you are having a good senior year! When I was younger, I learnt how to play golf, but I wasn’t the best at it. But I am glad that you enjoy playing it! I also learnt how to play poker last summer – and it’s fun! Congratulations on being a senior and having an amazing semester ahead!

  7. Hi Ryan! I relate a lot to not knowing which major to pick. I'm glad you were able to find something you're good at and will help you get a nice job. Also, it's so cool you play poker! I used to play it all the time with my grandpa, and it was always so much fun, so it's nice to meet someone else that plays it. I would also need that limit to $5 buy-ins because poker is very hard. Nice to meet you, hope you have a good semester and good luck after college!

  8. Hello Ryan!

Good luck on the rest of your time here at OU. I am graduating in the fall as well. I am glad you could choose a major and stay relatively on track as well. It does take a lot of thinking on what to do with the rest of your life. I also keep family close by because I need that support but I can understand needing personal freedom and growth as well. It is nice meeting you!

  9. MIS is such a great major, Ryan! I worked for a while in OU IT, and I learned so much there that I use every day in figuring out how to benefit from all the fantastic opportunities that the Internet and other digital tools can offer us. I just wish we had had the Internet back when I was in college... I graduated in 1986 and never even DREAMED such a thing as the Internet in my lifetime. You are so lucky to have all those digital tools and to be able to explore an MIS career.
And how great you have been able to keep on playing golf during these weird pandemic times. I love playing miniature golf... not really a sport. But it is still fun! :-)

  10. Hey Ryan! What a small world, I’m also from Edmond. I definitely agree that it’s nice that home is only a short drive away; it’s really convenient and I enjoy visiting my family some weekends. I also agree that MIS is a really important major in the job field. More and more jobs rely on technology, and I’m sure you’ll easily be able to land a great job right out of college

  11. Hi Ryan!
I find it cool that you are from Edmond because that is where my freshman year roommate is from and I have visited a couple times and it's pretty cool! I think it is exciting that graduation is approaching for you and you get to start a new chapter in your life! I hope that you have a great and healthy year and I hope that job searching goes well for you!

  12. Hey Ryan!

I honestly think it is amazing to have your family live nearby. Sometimes I wish I could go home and visit my family, but they live almost 3 hours away. It must be nice to have them close. If you want to just go home, you just have a short drive there. I am also a senior, but I am majoring in psychology and minoring in sociology. I am going to be graduating in December of 2021. Hey, would you look at that? We are going to graduate at the same time. I have always wanted to learn how to play poker.

  13. Hey Ryan!

It must be nice having your home and family so close to campus. I have to drive about 7 hours back to San Antonio in order to see my family and while that isn't too awful, it would be nice to have the option to travel home more often. I also love golfing and fishing. My house back home back up to a golf course so I used to go golfing all the time. I also love fishing those golf course ponds. Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  14. Hi Ryan!
I am so jealous you live so close to OU! I am a total homebody and I constantly miss my family and want to go home but can't easily because it is too far! I am still happy and blessed to be at OU though. I wish I could play golf. It honestly baffles me how someone is supposed to aim at a tiny hole so far away! Gotta have skills to do that!

  15. Hello Ryan, I think being an MIS major is really cool and interesting and I think you are right about technology only getting more prominent. I feel as if a degree in MIS could be very beneficial to a person in today’s age. I also really enjoy fishing, I used to do that all the time when I had free time. I wish the best of luck this semester!

  16. Hi Ryan! I have always thought that golfing would be a fun sport to pick up. I got really into playing tennis this past summer, and, like you and golf, I am not very good at it yet, but I still have a blast playing it with my friends. In the end, that's what really matters, right (and what makes you keep playing!)?

  17. Hi Ryan! It's cool that you only live 45 minutes from OU, it seems really convenient! I'm from the West Coast so I have to fly back and forth every break for school. Congratulations on graduating this year, I'm sorry your college experience was soured by COVID but at least one bad thing is coming to an end. Me and my roommates had a poker phase for a bit, and while I'm not the best, I do enjoy the social aspect of just kicking back with the boys.

  18. Hi Ryan,
My roommate is actually an MIS student as well, except his is just a minor. I've seen some of the classes he's taken pertaining to how to efficiently run Microsoft Excel though, and wow, it is altogether I completely different language! Obtaining a major in this field is surely going to be a way to get many jobs in the future.

  19. Hi Ryan!
You make a really good point - we live in a technology-driven world right now, so even before the pandemic, being tech savvy was extremely important. Now though, tech-related jobs and industries are huge. I am not the best with technology, but I get by when I need to. I wish that I had taken an MIS, CS, or coding class though; it would have been very helpful. I think wanting to save up so that you can work for yourself is an admirable goal. Though it a long way away, I wish you the best for that! Do you have any ideas of what you would want to do when you reach that goal?
